Sylvie Vartan was appointed WHO's Goodwill
Ambassador for Maternal and Child Health in the
European Region. She will be involved in WHO's
work in this area in the Region's 52 Member States.
Ms Vartan is President of the Sylvie Vartan
Foundation for Bulgaria, which aims to help
children in difficulty in this eastern European
country. The Foundation's activities there
complement those of WHO and will be the starting
point for Sylvie Vartan's cooperation with WHO
beyond the borders of Bulgaria. Ms Vartan will also
focus on the other countries in the Region where
the economic situation affects the health of
women and children.
However, WHO is very conscious that the situation
of women and children poses health problems
even in the richer countries of the Region.
Two ceremonies are being held to mark Sylvie
Vartan's appointment: one in Paris (France) on 15
March 2005 and the other in Sofia (Bulgaria) on 11
April 2005.
